Why?

• Writing new year greeting cards seems to be too formal and too time consuming job every end of year in Japan.
• Because Japan Post requires earlier posting around Christmas time to deliver the cards in the morning on the new year's day.
• This is an old-fashioned unchanged custom in Japan; ,people now can send email greetings at once.
• But this year of 2009 became different. I tried to write the past year's message in the form of Senryu of 17-sylable-verse.
• I hope this unique message may amuse my friends who read this postcard on the new year's day.
• Here is the senryo; I'd add some background explanation particularly for foreign friends.

• 毎年末に年賀状を書くのは、形式的で時間のかかる仕事である。
• それは正月に配達するためには、郵便局はクリスマスの頃の投函を要求しているからである。
• これは古くて変わらない日本の習慣である。今や年賀状は瞬時に送達できるのに。
• しかし2009年末は違っていた。一年のメッセージを川柳の形で表現しようとしたからである。
• このユニークな挨拶状を受け取って呼んだ友人が正月に喜ぶことを期待している。
• ここに川柳を再掲して、特に外国の友人の為に、川柳の背景を説明しておく。

• Japanese new year card usually contains following sentences:
  • A Happy New Year - New year day in 2010 (22nd year of Heisei)
  • Thank you very much for your kindness during last year. My best regards thus year. Please continue your favors toward the guidance and encouragement.
  • Dose this all patterned message is interesting?
• I'd challenge against this confined formalism in Japan.
  • Senryu would be an answer to this, which is expected to contain a bit moderately numerous message or comment about the last one year.
  • Even under the authoritarian Russian culture, anecdote has been popular among common people.

• 日本の年賀状は通常以下の文面である。
  • あけましておめでとうございます。2010年 (平成22年元旦)
  • 昨年中は大変お世話になりました。今年もどうぞご支援ご鞭撻の程宜しくお願い申し上げます。
  • このありふれた文面はおもしろいだろうか？
• この日本の閉塞的な形式主義に挑戦したいと思った。
  • その答えが川柳でさる。過ぎ去った１年について少し控えめでユーモラスなメッセージやコメントとなることを期待している。
  • 権威主義的なロシアでも、アネクドートは人々の間で人気がある。

2. Japan has suddenly changed its tone,
   by Lehman Brothers shock and the general election
• Lehman Brothers was bankrupted on Sept.15, 2008, by which Japanese economy suffered too much.
• Probably this accident made DPJ to win landslide victory at the general election held Sept.30, 2009. causing to terminate the 55 year regime (LDP of Japan, governed Japanese politics almost all years since 1955) and
3. With DPJ's manifesto, a pigeon suddenly appeared like a magic.
• New Prime Minister of Japan is Mr. Yukio Hatoyama. Hatoyama means literally pigeon-mountain. So, Mr. Hatoyama is appointed as the leader of DPJ after resignation of powerful Ichiro Ozawa.
• Hatoyama is a grandson of the former prime minster of Ichiro Hatoyama (1954-56 in power) and the first president of LDP.
4. Diet therapy for metabolic syndrome, high-priced (usually high fat food) is first assorted.
• high-priced and high fat is almost homonym in Japanese. For example, fatty tuna (toro) is great favorite (also very expensive) food for most of Japanese.
• 'Business assortment' is sharply promoted by DPJ to cut wasteful budget, becoming a buzz term in 2009.
5. Japanese super-computer should aim more than No.1, as it were on the cloud.
• By the business assortment investigation, the aid for a new super-computer become controversial, being pointed whether No.1 status is needed.
• Cloud computing is a hot issue of computer industry; Japan is far behind of Google or Amazon.com.
6. US and China (G2) could be Great-2 countries, if they commit to curb emission of carbon dioxide to prevent global warming.
• COP15 could not reach an agreement with numeric goal to curb carbon dioxide emission, particularly due to reluctance of commitment by large emitting countries like US and China.
• Japan declared 25% cut of the emission compared with 1990 level by 2020 at the last US assembly as Hatoyama initiative; but this committment is subject to international consensus.

1. 09年リーマン・選挙で様変わり
• リーマンブラザーズの破綻 (2008.9.15)によって日本経済は大きな痛手を負った。
• おそらくその時間が結果として、2009.8.30の総選挙で民主党の地滑り的勝利をもたらし、1995年以来続いた自民党支配の55年体制の終焉させた。
2. マニフェスト手品のようにピジョン出し
• 日本の新首相は鳩山由紀夫で、鳩=ピジョン。祖父は鳩山一郎元首相(在位1964-56)
3. メタボ食、高支出 (=高資質)から仕分けされ
• たとえば高額のトロは、日本人の大好物
• 事業仕分けは昨年の流行語
4. スパコンは１位の上の雲 (Cloud)目指せ
• 事業作業仕分けで、新たなスーパーコンピュータへの支援が議論になり、No.1を目指す必要性が指摘された。
• クラウド・コンピューティングはIT産業ではホットな話題で、日本はGoogleやAmazon.comに比べて立ち後れている。
5. CO2抑えてG2グレート2
• 国連の環境問題の会議であるCOP15では、数値目標で合意できなかった。特に二大排出国の米国と中国が渋ったせいである。
• 日本は1990年比で2020までに25%の排出カットを先の国連総会で鳩山イニシアティブとして宣言した。但しこれは国際合意が前提である。

  • But this senryu may cause misunderstand that myself would be 10th continued service at the ITCA.

Comment

• Senryu requires not only selection of word but also imagination of supposed readers.
• I think that many homonyms in Japanese may have developed such a short word (5-7-5 syllables) verse.

• 川柳は、単なる言葉の選択だけでなく、想定読者への想像力が要求される。
• ところで日本語に同音異義が多いことが、五七五の短い韻文を発達させたのだと思う。
