Travel with my dauger: Aurora observation tour: I took eight days special leave as the 25th anniversary continuous service in Itochu Corp., and determined to join in an aurora observation tour in Alaska from March 15 to 23, 1996 arranged by JTB. This was my first opportunity to observe aurora, though I traveled many times on business covering various places in the world. Unfortunately my wife escaped or declined to participate due to hard all-night observation under extreme coldness; so this travel happened to become two travelers with my daughter. Anchorage; It had been a familiar airport whenever we stopped as a relay point to Europe a decade or more years ago, but now direct flights over Siberia to Europe became usual. There was no more direct flights from Tokyo to Anchorage, so this time we must first fly to Anchorage via Seattle, which is a franchise city of Microsoft. I bought MacWorld journal at the airport, then changed our flight Alaskan Airline bound for Anchorage. It was middle of March, but the outside temperature at Anchorage recorded around zero degree Celsius, which was rather warmer than usual, they said. Alaskan Railway: Next morning it was snowing. Having prepared severe coldness, we boarded the Alaskan railway at Anchorage bound for Fairbanks, which is located 573km north taking 12 hours trip. The diesel locomotive started slowly in the heavily falling snow since that morning. There were various types of Japanese tourists, presumably honeymooners, young women group, aged couple, etc., who all looked rather maniac. The train ran so slow that we enjoyed nice scenery views along the valleys with views of Mt. McKinley, whose peak covered with snow is the highest 6,194m in North America. The sky was gradually clearing up. It was really picturesque landscape viewed from a window of a running train. There was a open space between the cars of passengers and cargo, where is the best spot to observe vivid landscape being blown by cold wind on the train.	0. 娘との二人旅行: オーロラ観望ツアー： 伊藤忠の25周年永年勤続特別休暇ということで、1996年3月15日より８日間、アラスカのオーロラ観測の旅 (JTBツアー) に行って来た。小生にとってもオーロラ観望旅行は初めてである。家内は、極寒の下での徹夜観測はとてもということで固辞したので、娘との二人旅行となった。 アンカレッジ： 以前は欧州北回りルートで何回も飛行場だけには中継で立ち寄ったことがあったが、最近ではシベリア上空の直行便が一般的となり、日本からアンカレッジに止まる必要はなくなったので、先ずシアトルへ飛ぶことになった。 まずは、Microsoftのお膝下のシアトル空港で、MacWorld雑誌を買い求め、一路アラスカ航空に乗り替えてアンカレッジへ向かった。そこは３月半ばというものの温度はまだ摂氏０度位だったが、それでもいつもより暖かいとのことであった。 アラスカ鉄道： 翌日は雪。寒さの準備をして、アラスカ駅からフェアバンクスまでの列車の旅が始まった。573km北をめざす約12時間の旅であった。早朝から激しく降っていた雪の中を、ディーゼル列車はゆっくりと出発した。そこには日本人ばかりのいろいろなグループがいた。新婚旅行あり、旅好きの女友達あり、老夫婦あり．．．心なしか、変わり者のグループが多そうな感じだ。列車は、景色をよく見せるためであろうか、途中北米大陸最高峰6,194m の雪をいただくマッキンレー山などが見える谷間を縫ってゆっくりと進んだ。幸運なことにようやく晴れ間も見えてきた。走り過ぎる車中から見る景色は絵葉書のように美しい。また客席車両と貨物車両との境に、展望できる空間があり、そこは冷たい風を浴びながら見る景色には一層迫力があった。
>Top 1. Chena Hot Springs: Fairbanks: It is located at the center of Alaska, 10 degrees C. colder than Anchorage. It showed already minus 10C when we arrived the station which looked frozen. A microbus was waiting for us to take to Chena Hot Springs, a health resort about 150km east from there. After having hasty dinner at a restaurant on the way a few miles from center of the city, we went out and looked at the dark sky with twinkling stars; it was the first appearance of aurora for us. Chena Hot Springs: It was isolated, where there was no leak of light; carefully considered to keep the best condition for aurora observation. After quick dinner, getting fully equipped rent Eskimo-like closes and boots, we rushed to the observation cottage located at top of the hill. We could observed aurora during the night, time to time, warming ourselves at the cottage. Aurora: It looked like bundle of faint ray or lattice of light, covering most of the sky, moving more actively than I imagined. Photo of aurora would be a bit different from the real. It was getting much colder after the midnight; it showed minus 30 degrees C. Coldness, clear night, no clear moon are suitable for aurora watching; this night just satisfied these conditions. Aurora heavenly appeared, ran about and then disappeared in the whole sky in a manner of strictly rejecting every secular thing. When aurora appeared at the zenith, bundle of light radiated into various directions, changing its color from greenish white to pinkish white. Our observation continued until 3:00 am.	1. チェナホットスプリングズ: フェアバンクス： アラスカ中央に位置し、アンカレッジより約10度も寒い。すでに摂氏零下10度近く下がっており、駅に到着したら、そこはすでに凍りついていた。マイクロバスが用意され、そこから150km 程東にあるチェナホットスプリングズという保養地へのマイクロバスでの移動となった。町から数キロ先の途中で夕食を急いだ後、早速後、外へ出て、星のまたたく夜空を見上げた。それが我々にとって最初のオーロラの出会いであった。 チェナホットスプリングズは、周囲にまったく明かりがなく、オーロラ観測を十分配慮した場所である。夕食を急いだ後、レンタルのエスキモーのような衣服とブーツを着て、早速の観望を開始すべく丘の上の観測小屋へ急いだ。そこでしばしの暖をとりながら、一晩中オーロラを観測することができた。 オーロラ： は非常に淡い光の束で、全天を覆いつつ激しく変化するので、とてもカメラに納められそうもない。 (トライはしたが．．．) 午前を回ると温度計は零下30度を示していた。寒い晴れた月のない夜が一番オーロラ観測に適しているそうで、この夜もまさにそのような夜であった。 あらゆる世俗的なものを拒絶するかのような厳しさを示しつつ、オーロラは全天を駆けめぐり、現れては消えていった。頭上に訪れるときは、コロナのように、四方八方へ飛び散る光の束となり、その光は緑白色からピンク色にまで分布した。朝の３時頃まで頑張って観望し続けた。
>Top 2. Aurora Watching Day-2: The second night: It was also cleared with very coldness. Last night experience made us a bit smarter; we prepared for the appearance of aurora with single-lens reflex camera attached to a tripod. As we expected, aurora again appeared and started their dance above us. Actually the altitude of aurora is about 100 - 700 km, much higher than jet plane of 10 km. It was very feeble light curtain covering, sometime sprawling almost the whole sky, changing its appearance very frequently in a short times, and its color tint is too delicate to observe through the window glass. This is why all the observers are enduring outside in the coldness with naked eyes. It was very difficult to trace and record its actual movement. The camera is enforced to function lower than a refrigerator temperature. I could not find proper words how to express this phenomenon. Two observers groups: in the second night began to split; so-called 'power observers group' and 'beginners group', just like groups of PC users. Among the foreman's group, such amicable comments could be heard in the dark coldness, 'You are also really tough and powerful watchers, aren't you?' When I felt insensitive due to coldness, I escaped to the cottage with zero degree temperature. My daughter aiming to be an astronomer still endured to continue aurora H in the outside.	2. オーロラ観望２日目: 第２日目： ２日目もまた晴れて非常に寒かった。昨晩の経験があったので、まずは三脚付きの一眼レフカメラを持って、オーロラの出現を待つことにした。期待した通り、オーロラは再び現れ、頭上でダンスを始めた。実際にはオーロラの高さは100-700km上空で、ジェット機の航路である約10kmより遙かに高い。それはほぼ全天を覆い、時としての短い時間でたうち回るようなを弱い光のカーテンである。その色合いは非常に微妙なので窓ガラスをとして観測はできない。 そのためにオーロラ観望は、裸眼で外の寒さに耐えながら行うことになる。その実際の動きを追跡し記録することは難しい。カメラは冷凍庫よりも低い温度で動作することになるからだ。この現象をうまく表現する言葉がみつからなかった。 二つの観測グループ： 二日目ともなると、 観測グループはPower Observer" と "Beginner"とに分離してくるのはパソコンの世界に限らない。前者のグループの中では、おお、おぬしも頑張っているのか．．．という妙なな友情のような雰囲気が極寒の観測所内に流れる。小生は寒さで感覚がなくなると、温度０度の観測小屋へ待避することとなるが、娘は天文学専攻の意地でずーと頑張って観望していた。
>Top 3. Aurora Watching Day-3: The third night; we observed from the top of the skiing crest at the suburb of Fairbanks. It is ideal place to look 360 degree panoramic view, though cold wind blew. The observatory cottage was better equipped with hot coffee and warmer stove than Chena Hot Springs. Aurora appeared also over the sky this night, but looked a little distant from us. It looked like curtain-shaped usually we see at the picture. (It was not corona like radiation of light which we saw at Chena.) But full panoramic view was great. It was cold about minus 30 degree, and my exposed face felt painful.	3. オーロラ観望３日目: 第３日目： の観望はフェアバンクス郊外のスキー場の山の上ということになった。360度観望するには絶好の場所だが、その分、冷たい風が吹き抜ける。傍らの観測小屋の中は、チェナ温泉より暖かい設備があった。オーロラはこの夜も期待に違わず全天に現れた。ただ少し距離が遠く、カーテン状のものしか見えない。 (チェナ温泉で見た真上の爆発するようなコロナ状ではなかった。) 但し、視界360度のパノラマ眺望は絶景である。この夜も零下30度以下であり、露出している顔が痛い。
>Top 4. Lucky Observation: Here is said more than 200 days are observable of aurora in the year, and we could enjoy lucky observation of aurora all three nights. During the tour, there were additional events of dog-sleigh or sightseeing, but these are all appendices with little impression due to physical and mental exhaustion. Could I have another opportunity of aurora watching? Aurora book,written by Prof. S. Akasofu of Alaska University says: "The degree of vacuum of the altitude where aurora appears is equal level to that of electric discharge pipe. This means that the upper layer atmosphere is considered as a big electric discharge pipe. When solar electron beams (solar wind) with high energy jump into atmosphere and collide first with nitrogen molecule, then ionize and emit ultraviolet light (3,914 Angstrom) which is invisible to the eyes. When the secondary electron collide with oxygen atom, being encouraged. When it returns to the basic it emits greenish white color (5,577A) which is usually observed as aurora. When the primary energy level is high and stimulates oxygen atom emitting dark reddish color (6,300A), or stimulates nitrogen molecule getting crimson color light" We can imagine component of the atmosphere by the color of the aurora to a certain extent. Pale greenish aurora frequently occurs on the earth, which means the atmosphere on the earth contains oxygen, a symbol of indication of life existence. The color of aurora on the Jupiter will be pinkish, because it contains mostly hydrogen. However, oxygen molecule collides with solar wind at the upper lever (400 - 500km) can produce red aurora in rare cases. On the contrary, nitrogen molecule collides at lower places (100km) will make pinkish frilled curtain.	4. 幸運な観望旅行: この地域は年間約200日もオーロラが出現するといわれてはいたが、実際３日共、天気にも恵まれ非常にラッキーなオーロラ観測の旅となった。途中、ツアー旅行らしく犬そりや市内見学などもあったが、オーロラに圧倒されて心身とも疲れ切って体が動かないばかりか、あまり感動が湧いてこなかった。いつの日かまたオーロラを見ることがあるだろうか？ アラスカ大学教授赤祖父俊一著のオローラ写真集の説明によれば： 「オーロラが現れる高度の大気の真空度は放電管の真空度に匹敵する。それゆれ上層大気全体が一つの放電管と考えられ、太陽からの高エネルギー電子が大気中に突入するとまず窒素分子と衝突して電離する。このときの紫外光 (3914A) を発するがこれは肉眼では見えない。電離で放出された電子 (二次電子) が酸素原子に衝突すると励起が生じ、それが基底状態に戻る時にオーロラの緑白色 (5577A) を生じる。第一次電子のエネルギーが高いとき、さらに酸素原子を励起する場合 暗赤色 (6300A) や窒素分子を励起し、深紅色を生じる。」 オーロラの色によって大気の成分がある程度推定できる。淡い緑色のオーロラは酸素のある、生命のある地球を象徴する色でもある。主に水素成分からなる木星のオーロラはピンク色をしている。 なお、同じ酸素分子でも強い太陽風が上層 (400 - 500km) でぶつかると稀に赤いオーロラとなる。また反対に、低い大気の濃い場所で (100km) 窒素分子とぶつかるとカーテン状のフリルのところが ピンク色の縁取りができる。
>Top 5. Legend of Aurora: Eskimo legend of aurora describes: "The land and ocean are surrounded by bottomless abyss which nobody can measure its depth. Beyond these, there appears narrow and dangerous path leading to the heaven. The sky is like a big dome made of solid arched material covering the whole land. There is a hole in this big dome, through which death spirits are row to the heaven. The spirits lived in the heaven carry torchs for the new coming spirits; this is the light of aurora. We can see the spirits are doing a feast in the heaven, and enjoying ball game with the skull of walrus......." "Aurora is a living creature, and when we blow a whistle, they will come nearer to us out of curiosity."	5. オーロラの伝説: エスキモーの伝説から．．． 「陸と海の淵は底知れぬ深淵に囲まれている。それを越えて狭い危険な一筋の歩道が天界に通じる。空は大地の上にアーチ状の固い建材で作られた一大ドームをなしている。その中に一つの穴が空いており、それを通って死霊たちは天国へ行く。．．．天界に以前から住んでいる精霊は新入者の足許を照らしてやるため、たいまつに火を点ずる。これがオーロラの光である。精霊たちが天界で祝宴をしたり、セイウチの頭蓋骨で球技をしているのが見られる．．．」 「オーロラは生き物でそれにむかって口笛を吹くと、好奇心にかられて近寄ってくる．．．」

Comment

After this experience my daughter often visit to Alaska or Scadinavia to meet aurora again carrying the heavy mechanical Nikon single-lens reflex camera.

この経験の後、娘はしばしは、重たいメカニカルなニコン一眼レフを抱えて、アラスカや北欧を訪れ、オーロラと再会している。
