Why?	Donal Keene: Donald Keene, one of the most famous person of understanding Japanese culture writes; "Matsuo Basho was highly sensitive to the beauty of nature, but he also described with warmth the people he met on the way, and the past, no less than the present, was always with him. >Top Matsuo Basho is an unusual poet and time-traveler of 17th century, writing many bewitching and unforgettable haiku poems (Japanese 5-7-5 syllables-poem). 300 years have passed since this journey, which corresponds about 100 generations; just described at the beginning of this story as "the months and the years are the travelers of 100 generation." I think, "The Narrow road to Oku" is a kind of travelogue describing nature and people living in deep-north part of Japan, together with most seasonable poems. He traveled all journey basically on foot accompanying only one companion named Sora, who also wrote distinguished poems. They (then 40-year-old Basho and his companion Sora) walked about 2,400km spending 150 days. The average speed is about 16km per day; about 3.2 km per hour, if they walked 5 hours a day. During the journey, the seasons left them behind. They can feel from spring to autumn during their journey. They were also time-travelers as Basho wrote in the opening paragraph. Poems in the travelogue were magically described with the corresponding seasons passed by, with local habitants and nature including grass, flowers and birds as well as famous historical memories.

松尾芭蕉は１７世紀の希有な俳人であり時の旅人であり、多くの魅力的で忘れがたい俳句を残している。 この旅から300年の年月を経たが、これは世代にすれば百世代。正に「月日は百代の過客」ということになる。 「おくのほそ道」は日本の北国に生きる自然と人々と、その時折の俳句を織り交ぜて描いた旅行記の一種であると思う。芭蕉は基本的には唯一、弟子の曾良のみを連れてほとんどの行程を歩いた。 40歳の芭蕉と弟子の曾良は、約150日かけて、大体2400kmを走破した。これは１日当たり約16kmであり、一日5時間歩くとすると時速は約3.2kmとなる。この旅行を通じて、季節は彼らを追い越して行った。そして旅行中、春から秋までを感じ取ることができた。 正に芭蕉が冒頭に書いているように、彼ら自身が時の旅人だったのである。 おくのほそ道の俳句は、通り過ぎて行く季節、そこに住む人々、草木、花や鳥など自然ともに歴史に残る想い出を込めて詠われたものである。

Those who float away their lives on ships or who grow old leading horses are forever journeying, and their home are wherever their travels take them. Many of the men of old died on the road, and I too for years past have been stirred by the sight of a solitary cloud drifting with the wind to ceaseless thoughts of roaming......"
