Why?
- 16C is an innovative century: Rennasance and Reformation occured
in the West, and germination of various new ideas, trade and technilogies
occured in the East. This setting of changing age may produced an
exceptinal woman's success story.
- The idea of 'medicine and food have same root' was derived from
the ancient China, meaning both aim to keep good health.
- In the drama Jang-Geum was described as a person of conviction
as a cook and a physician; she never allowed to make bad use of
food and medicine, even for revenge. And she practiced new challenges
both in cooking and curing learned from many data and experiments
as well as her instinctive ability.
Summary
要約

- Jang-Geum's recipe for success:

a person of ability.

more important than ability or inspiration.
- The spirit of never give up is always important to remember.
- You need not relinquish your vengeance, but bear it underneath
by stealth.

24. Impending crisis:
- Jang-Geum:
Really? Oh yes. Why didn't I think of the imperial kitchen? May
I know whose vinegar bottle is this?
- Little trainees:
We don't know ... We can't touch all the things there.
- Jang-Geum:
Where are all the people who just prepared food here?
- Little trainees:
It's the King's meal time, I think they've gone to the utensil kitchen.
- Jang-Geum:
Utelsil kitchen? Let me go and see.
.....
- King:
This is also made with the vinegar which is being buried underground
for few decades, right? This vinegar is nicer each time I tasted
it. The taste is so unforgettable. This is so nice.
....
- Jang-Geum:
Did you see the vinegar bottle here?
- Madam Min:
Madam Han took it.
- Jang-Geum:
It belongs to Madam Han?
- Madam Min: Yes, why? Don't just stand there. Please clean the
kitchen together with me.
>Top 25. Enemy of mother:
- Jang-Geum's letter:
"After reading my mother's diary, I learned about the incident
she buried the vinegar pot with her best friend here. I wish to
meet you. I am an maid of the imperial kitchen by the name Seo Jang-Geum."
- Madam Han:
Jang-Geum.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam. Madam, you are ...
- Madam Han:
You are really ...
- Jang-Geum:
Yes, madam. I am her daughter.
- Madam Han:
How could this be? The Ming Yi I have been missing all my life.
I fell guilty towards her all my life. Her daughter is actually
beside me. It is actually you. When there were mud rain I was thinking
who was that amazing mother.
- Jang-Geum:
That was my mom.
- Madam Han:
When I asked to get water for me to drink.
- Jang-Geum:
Yes, that time you game me the knife.
- Madam Han:
Yes, that was Ming Yi's knife. It was Ming Yi's. The friend who
said that your cooking is excellent. You fed her with mountain berries.
She said it was very nice.
- Jang-Geum:
Yes. Yes, Madam.
- Madam Han:
Yes. That is Ming Yi, It's Ming Yi.
- Jang-Geum:
Yes, she is my mom. She is my mom, Madam.
- Madam Han:
Thank you, Ming Yi. Thank you, Jang-Geum.
- >Top Jang-Geum:
Really? Here is the place where mom was born?
- Madam Han:
Yes. I brought some food and came here to look for your mom for
the first time. Three years ago your grandfather was still alive,
waiting for Ming Yi to come home.
- Jang-Geum:
Did you say my grandfather?
- Madam Han:
Because he was poor, so he sent his daughter to the palace. He felt
guilty to the point he refused to eat the rice that Ming Yi sent
back. Ever since Ming Yi was missing I kept bringing the rice here.
But he still refused to eat. Whenever I go for holidays I will visit
him for Ming Yi. In my heart I was also hoping for Ming Yi to come
home. Here was also the first time someone praised me. she said
the dishes I prepared was very delicious. This is the place I taught
Ming Yi how to cook, Ming Yi also taught me how to read and write.
Now I am not going to forgive those who harmed Ming Yi. I don't
want to live in fear and guilt anymore. i guess this is what Ming
Yi wants. That's why even though she knew that your life would be
in danger, but she still wanted you to come to the royal kitchen.
This is Ming Yi. Only Ming Yi is like that. how come you and Ming
Yi have so many things in common? how come you are exactly like
her? You also came to my side.
>Top 26. A trap:
- Oh Gyom-Ho:
You said sulphur..
- Chief Doctor:
Sulphur is a strong poison?
- Oh Gyom-Ho:
Madam Han. You knew about this and you still give it to the king?
- Madam Han:
I really don't know.
- Oh Gyom-Ho:
You presented poisonous ducks for the king, and you still insisted
that there no problem with the food.
- Madam Han:
But all the people were eating the same thing, and nothing happened.
- Chief Doctor.
Although that is your hometown, but you have been in the palace
till now. How can you be so sure? Besides, the ducks have been poisoned.
The one who eats the duck meat may not directly be poisoned to death.
but poison is poison. All the medicines will have very different
effect on different types of body.
- Sir Sang Son:
Sir, since it is poison, how come the officer scent couldn't
differentiate it?
- Chief Doctor:
There is a possibility that the poison can be detected by the silver
wares when the poison touched the silver wares. But the poison has
been absorbed by animals will not be detected. The poison in sulphur
is very strong. It has to be soaked in yellow soil water and boil
in the ginger juice for 15 times, or put it together to boil nine
times to get ride of the poison. This is the only way.
- Doctor Jung Yun-Su:
Even if the sulphur which has gone through this process may be effective
in healing ulcer. But it may cause harm to the king. The doctor
has never dared to use this medicine.
- Chief Doctor:
But the king has eaten such poisonous ducks. How can we explain
this?
- Oh Gyom-Ho:
Ne need to discuss anymore. We will send the criminal to jail.
>Top 27. False confession:
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, why did you do that? Why? You'd did this and you will die.
- Madam Han:
If I don't do this, both of us will die.
- Jang-Geum:
If I am not alive with Madam, I will take the same path as Madam.
- Madam Han:
Please don't say that. I choose to die and let you live, not because
of you. I ... I did this because I want Ming Yi and I and you can
survive. At least one of us need to survive. It doesn't matter whether
it is you or me. At least one of us need to survive. Jang-Geum,
you need to remember. You need to think through why Madam Choi wants
to make sure we die? It is because of fear. We are sparks of fire.
It was me who saved Ming Yi who almost died. Ming Yi saved you from
the gates of death. And she sent you to me. Now it is my turn to
save you. One day this sparks of fire will burn and you will resurrect
me and Ming Yi, and you will bring back Ming Yi and my innocence.
I can wait till that day. Ming Yi is waiting for that day as well.
- Jang-Geum:
Now I don't want to wait. I don't want to carry this load anymore.
This time if madam you leave me, I must go with you. I have been
hating my mom who has forsaken me. Because living is a burden. Now
I will not be willing ... I really don't want to live like this
anymore. I really don't want to ... I really don't want you.
- Madam Han:
Please don't say that. If you say that don't ever call me madam
again. Jang-Geum. No, Jang-Geum how do you want me to see Ming Yi
this way? I can't see Ming Yi. You are not only Ming Yi's daughter,
Jang-Geum you ... you are my daughter. You are my daughter. you
can't find a mother who knows that this is the road to death and
still want to bring her along.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam. But I ...
- Madam Han:
You need to live. You need to live.
- >Top Madam Han:
Jang-Geum, I have mistreated you in the past.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, why do you say that?
- Madam Han:
After losing Ming Yi you must be so sad to the point of wanting
to die. But instead I have to depend on you. Such a young age you
are so gracious to accept me for who I am. But I have been so hard
on you. Every night I was worried you might leave me and ask for
a transfer. I was so worried that I couldn't sleep.
- Jang-Geum:
Really?
- Madam Han:
I am so bad. Jang-Geum
- Jang-Geum:
Yes.
- Madam Han:
Some people misunderstood you. You are not
talented. You are good at being hard working. When everyone
was resting, you are awake. Forever getting ready to have a new
start. Even if you were to be left on a cold ice, you would be the
seed that blossoms into beautiful flowers. I think you must be feeling
so miserable and discouraged. Oh yes, Jang-Geum.
- Jang-Geum:
Yes.
- Madam Han:
I still need to ... I have something I need you to do for me. If
I die, I want to let you know the things I want you to do, don't
rest.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, if you want to tell me these, I rather you don't say anything
at all. We are going to reach Qi Wu Pu. Soon we can rest on the
ship.
- Madam Han:
Yes, you are right.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, madam, we will reach very soon. You need to stay awake.
- Madam Han:
Yes, I know.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, are you awake?
- Madam Han:
Yes, I am.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, do you see the sea?
- Madam Han:
Yes, I have seen it.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, you need to stay by my side.
- Madam Han:
Of course.
- >Top Jang-Geum:
Madam, don't sleep now.
- Madam Han:
Alright.
- Jang-Geum:
Are your eyes open?
- Madam Han:
Yes.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam, please move your hands. Move your legs. Madam. Please tell
me how to steam big prawns. You said I have the ability to draw
out the taste of the delicious cuisine. How should we steam big
prawns? Please teach me. Madam, hurry up.
- Madam Han:
First, wash the big prawns.
- Jang-Geum:
Wash the big prawns.
- Madam Han:
Take out the intestine.
- Jang-Geum:
Use what? Use what?
- Madam Han:
Use the tail.
- Jang-Geum:
Then? ... Then?
- Madam Han:
Salt.
- Jang-Geum:
Put the salt? After putting the salt ...
- Madam Han:
Jang-Geum.
- Jang-Geum:
After putting the salt.
- Madam Han:
Let's return to the palace.
- Jang-Geum:
After putting the salt, then?
- Madam Han:
Let's return to the palace.
- Jang-Geum:
Should we steam it? Steam it?
- Madam Han:
Jang-Geum ... !
- Jang-Geum:
Please don't call me like this. Before my mom passed away, she called
me like that as well. Madam. Madam.
- Madam Han:
I ... need to return to the palace first. Jang-Geum, I will wait
for you to come back. I will say sorry to you. Jang-Geum.
- Jang-Geum:
Madam. Please don't fall asleep. We will reach very soon.
.....
Please don't fool around with me. Please don't treat me like this.
Why everyone treat me like this? What did I do wrong? What do you
want me to do? Now what should I do? I will never start all over
again. This time I also want to rest. Mom ate mountain berries before
she died. Madam, you don't even give me this privilege. I will not
... I will not listen to you again.

- Kang Duk Goo:
Sir, is you.
- Kang Duk Goo's wife:
Sir. Why are you still calling him sir. Jang-Geum has done so much
for him. Now Jang-Geum is in trouble. He is like a tortoise, doesn't
dare to stick out his head. All scholar-bureaucrat is like that.
Therefore, everyone is saying that you can't trust those officers.
Jang-Geum is not like you. Do you know that? Jang-Geum did not return
to the palace on time because she wanted to save him. Therefore,
she was sent to the palace's farm. Sir, the person that you have
been looking for, the savior who you have been looking for day and
night. That person is actually Jang-Geum.
- Min Jio-Ho:
What ... What are you saying?
- Kang Duk Goo:
Yes, sir. The silver knife's owner who you've asked me to find for
you is Jang-Geum.
- Min Jio-Ho:
What do you mean? Please tell me, what do you mean?
- Kang Duk Goo's wife:
Even if you know, what can you do about it? Jang-Geum has already
come to this stage. What can you do even if you know about this?
What is the big deal of her being you savior? My poor Jang-Geum
.

will not be caught by the soldiers. The reason why you have become
like this today is because I was not able to help you. Other than
blaming myself, I have almost lost my reason. Therefore, I have
decided to help you. I have planned it in advance. The boat will
be here before dawn. You can take the boat and leave this place.
But after I see you I finally realized if you escape this time and
were caught you will not live. Even if you were lucky enough to
survive you whole life will be the same as your parents. You will
have to live a life of a fugitive living in darkness. I hope that
you will give me another chance. No matter what I will prove your
innocence. I will prove that you were not a traitor. Please give
me a chance. But if do don't feel like doing this and insist to
leave this place right now, I will still assist you. No, not only
now, even if it is three days, one year, three years, or even ten
years later if you want to leave I will always be by your side.
But I beg you to follow my instruction. If you continue to be like
this I would not know how to help you any more.

>Top 37. Mother and Empress
Dowager:
- Empress Dowager:
It is fine, you can tell us the answer.
- Jang-Geum:
I have said before. This lady's main job is to be a nutritionist.
As a mother she needs to take care of the children at all times
to make sure the children have enough food, clothe and sleep well.
The nutritionist needs to be aware of what food is not to be consumed
by the King and to observe what kind of food will be good for the
king's body. She would think about these things day and night. Therefore
the King of China started using nutritionist. It is originated from
mothers. Therefore Empress you are not only the king's mother you
are also the king's nutritionist. This woman is like a servant in
the house. Actually she is also the teacher who is respected by
the whole family. Though the mother could feel cold but in their
hearts they would be wondering if the children are warm. The mother
might feel hungry but in their hearts they would be wondering if
the children are well fed. Mother might feel tired while she was
working but they would be wondering if the children were safe. So
as a mother the suffering she has to go through is more than an
ordinary servant. But without the care and protection of a mother
as children how would we be well fed and keep warm in winter? Therefore
mother's job is tougher than any servants. She is also more noble
than any teacher. When she is alive in the world, the whole world
would be secure but when this lady disappears the whole world would
be attacked by floods.
- Empress Dowager:
While I am still alive I can be the king's security. But if I die
the king's tears would flood the river. So how can I see the king
go through its suffering and not doing anything?
- King:
Empress.
- Empress Dowager:
That is why I said this child is rude. From the very beginning I
have already lost. If I don't know the answer I will have to accept
treatment. If I do know the answer I have to come to a realization
I can't let my son your highness to be troubled. I was helpless
how can I punish this child then? But I also can't award her because
of this. Your highness, why don't you tell me how to handle this
child?
- King:
Empress. What you have just said has deep meaning. I am not sure
what to do. I ... I did not understand how empress was feeling all
this while.
- Empress Dowager:
Your highness, no. I am the one who is wrong.
>Top 38. Secret of pill:
- Empress Dowager:
Did you really use garlic and rice bran to make tablets for me?
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
Yes, Empress. Garlic is good for the stomach. It is good for bowel
movement as well. It is the best medicine for your beriberi. Besides
rice bran is effective for those who does not have appetite or having
vomiting symptoms. Therefore I think that this is the best medicine
for you at this stage. That was why I decided to use this prescription.
- Empress Dowager:
Why didn't you tell me that it is garlic in the very beginning?
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
I was worried that you might refuse to eat it. Everyone is the same
when they realize it is something they dislike. They would feel
like vomiting.
- Empress Dowager:
Though I might not know that the dish has garlic, but I can smell
even the slightest garlic in a dish. How come these tablets do not
have the garlic smell at all? How did you do it?
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
It was Jang-Geum who get rid of the smell.
- Empress Dowager:
How?
- Jang-Geum:
I used the green tea leaves to get rid of the smell. I steamed the
green tea leaves together with the garlic then I smashed them in
order to make ii more like tablets. I used the dried red dates peeled
off the skin and taken out the seeds. I added rice bran, grinded
them into power and make them into tablets. That was why when empress
take those tablets you can't taste the garlic.
- Empress Dowager:
What a genius. It was the doctor who use the garlic as the prescription
for making the tablets. But I do not like garlic. Then it was the
female doctor who make tablets without the smell of garlic. This
is excellent.
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
Actually it was Jang-Geum who thought of the garlic for the prescription.
- Queen:
Really?
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
Yes. After Jang-Geum has don a research on empress' eating habit,
she thought of this idea.
- Empress Dowager:
Really? You used my eating habit in treating my sickness. You have
such great talent.
- Queen:
So, from now on, Empress can start receiving treatment?
- Doctor Shin Ik-Bil:
Since empress won't vomit after taking the medicated soup, she can
now start using both medicine and food for treatment. After a while
she can start receiving3 acupuncture.
- Queen:
This is great.
- Empress Dowager:
Thank you. From now on I will try to not be picky about food. Whatever
Doctor Shin Ik-Bil asks me to eat I will eat.
>Top 39. Yuh-Ri's plot:
- Jang-Geum:
That morning you were the one who asked me to go to the central
palace to do check up for the queen.
- Yuh-Ri:
What did you say? I don't have such authority.
- Jang-Geum:
When did you tell me that the place girl's life was in danger?
- Yuh-Ri:
I did tell you. You were the one who insisted to go to the central
palace. That was why you wouldn't listen to me.
- Jang-Geum:
I guess you were the one who hid the notice, right?
- Yuh-Ri:
How can you accuse someone who is innocent? Though I am your senior
but I have never envied your medical skill. If you have more credits
than me, then you should be able to beat me. Why do you strive
to get rid of me? Why do you want to harm me?
- Jang-Geum:
Do you really want to treat me like this? If you insist you want
to treat me like this, I will not let you. I think, Yuh-Ri, you
don't have the right to stay here. No, you shouldn't even be a
doctor. I will stop you. I will stop you!
